Barbara Gosselin, PT
If you are suffering from back pain, neck pain, headaches or other persistent pain that nothing else seems to help, I can help you.
My approach to healing is a whole-body approach that uses very light touch, gentle, hands-on energy healing techniques that help activate your own internal healing forces to decrease pain and help you feel better on every level. Since it recognizes the interconnectedness of all parts of the body, mind, emotions and spirit, I refer to it as Holistic Bodywork. It seeks to uncover and resolve the underlying causes of pain and dysfunction. I also rely on my training and experience as a Physical Therapist to inform my work, which gives me a deep and thorough understanding of the body, and helps bridge the worlds of conventional medicine and holistic healing.
Benefits of Holistic Bodywork
- Your pain will likely decrease and you will feel a greater sense of ease in your body.
- You will feel more relaxed and less stressed. One client recently told me after one of our healing sessions that she felt like she had been away on vacation because she felt so relaxed and rejuvenated.
- You will be able to enjoy many of your favorite activities again.
- You will have more energy available to focus on areas of your life that really matter to you.
- You will have greater understanding about your pain and more trust in your body, which will help you know what to do to take care of yourself, preventing more problems in the future.
- You will likely find some resolution of psychological or emotional issues that are linked with your physical pain that have been holding you back.
Depending on your needs and circumstances, my integrative healing approach combines any of the following healing methods:
Fascial Mobilization: Fascial Mobilization seeks to find and address restrictions within the fascial system. Fascia is a continuous, three-dimensional matrix of connective tissue that extends throughout the entire body. Every structure in the body, including muscles, nerves, bones, organs, blood vessels and lymph nodes, is embedded within the fascia, which binds, supports, nourishes and connects them. Restrictions in the fascial system are common and can be caused by many things, including physical trauma, prolonged stress, surgical scars, emotional trauma, and repeated stressful postures. It is not unusual for a symptom in one part of the body to actually be caused by a fascial restriction in a distant part of the body. Since it is a continuous, three-dimensional web, fascial restrictions distort the whole fascial matrix, resulting in abnormal strain patterns throughout the entire fascial system. These strain patterns put stress on the tissues embedded in the fascia that fall within the path of the restriction, potentially causing pain and dysfunction. Often, problems that don’t respond to conventional therapies, which typically do not address the entire fascial system, or that improve only temporarily, have a fascial component that has not been addressed. In these cases, releasing the fascial restrictions typically leads to lasting relief.
Craniosacral Therapy: Craniosacral Therapy seeks to find and release restrictions within the Craniosacral System, which is composed of the bones of the skull, face, spine and pelvis, the cranial membranes that connect them, and the fluid contained within the membrane system. These cranial membranes are considered the deepest layer of the fascial system described earlier as they connect directly to the fascial system, creating one large integrated system. The craniosacral system provides the environment for the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord), cushioning, protecting and nourishing it, which is vital because the central nervous system controls all conscious and unconscious physiological processes in the body. Restrictions in the Craniosacral System are common and can be caused by many of the same things that cause fascial restrictions, as well as by birth trauma or head trauma. Craniosacral restrictions can have far reaching implications throughout the body. Many chronic problems have an underlying craniosacral restriction, and conventional therapies that do not address these restrictions will be either ineffective, or only partially or temporarily effective. In these cases, Craniosacral Therapy can create lasting improvement.
Energy Healing: Energy Healing seeks to restore balance and flow within the human energy field that surrounds, interpenetrates and is continuous with the tissues of the body. Problems in the body, such as pain or weakness, are typically reflected in the energy field, and can be felt as a disturbance or weakness in the energy flow in that area. The form of Energy Healing that I practice is an intuitive and free flowing process. Using light touch, I assess the quality of energy flow in your body and if I find an area with altered flow, I place my hands there and support the flow of energy with my hands, helping it strengthen and balance. A balanced energy field enables our bodies, minds, emotions, and spirits to function as efficiently and fluidly as possible, reducing pain and promoting healing on every level.
Physical Therapy: Physical Therapy is the practice of using physical agents (e.g. heat, cold), manual manipulation techniques (e.g. stretching, manual joint mobilization and soft tissue release techniques), and utilizing specific exercises and education to reduce pain and restore and promote physical function. Although I don’t utilize heat or cold treatments in my bodywork sessions, the other techniques can be effective at helping the body recover from pain and dysfunction. However I have found that these physical therapy techniques alone often fall short because they don’t treat the fascial or craniosacral systems, and they don’t take into account the holistic nature of pain and dysfunction. My experience and knowledge of traditional physical therapy techniques enables me to include them as part of a comprehensive program which combines both conventional and holistic healing techniques to bring you the best of both worlds. Although these four healing methods are described as individual and different techniques, in practice I combine them into an integrated healing approach that is able to find the restrictions and holding patterns in your energy, fascial and craniosacral systems and release them, with your inner healing force guiding the whole process. The result is that the abnormal strain patterns in your body are alleviated, resulting in relief from pain and a more aligned, balanced, and mobile body and energy field.
Through my work with Barbara, my shoulder pain has been resolved
I first came to see Barbara Gosselin after having shoulder surgery, which had been complicated by extreme fatigue due to being diagnosed with mono just after my surgery. I had residual pain in my shoulder region and overwhelming fatigue which interfered with everything and also resulted in increasing old pains in my back. Through her work, my shoulder pain has essentially resolved and my energy level is slowly increasing. I feel better after each session.
I am also getting relief from the migraines that I have suffered for years, and the chronic pains that I have due to scoliosis. My spine feels straighter and I feel more centered when I stand than I ever have. I am also noticing a decrease in the facial pain that usually precedes my headaches as well as the particular cervical pain I’ve had for years.
I highly recommend Barbara’s services. She is thoughtful, caring, skilled, highly knowledgeable, and talented.
Going to Barbara for cranial sacral has been a monthly help to me for many years for long term dizziness, back spasms, after surgeries, a torn meniscus and arthritis.
My GP recommended craniosacral treatment after a lengthy surgery caused me to lose my ‘gait’ and regular physical therapy was unable to help. Going to Barbara for cranial sacral has been a monthly help to me for many years for long term dizziness, back spasms, after surgeries, a torn meniscus and arthritis. I have several colleagues and friends who have benefited from treatment from Barbara. Barbara is an experienced professional and I hope you consider this form of care for yourself.
She has helped me change my life from the inside out and feel better than I knew was possible.
After years of struggling with various health problems (heart palpitations, dizziness, nausea etc), I was finally diagnosed with a head and neck injury along with extensive musculoskeletal imbalances and was told it would take a miracle for me to get better. Barbara Gosselin has been that miracle. She has helped me change my life from the inside out and feel better than I knew was possible. When I first started seeing her a few years ago, I thought her touch was way too gentle to be effective. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Yes, she’s gentle, but her approach is also deep and strong and it has been exactly what my body needed in order to slowly release ingrained tensions that had been with me for most of my life. She is also wise and compassionate and I’m very grateful to have her in my life. I have sent all my family members and close friends to her and I would recommend her to anyone in need of help, whether in body, mind, spirit, or all three.
I have found the results of her work to be bordering on miraculous. Now, I have no more headaches, my eyes aren’t sensitive to light and I have overall greater awareness of my whole body.
I first started seeing Barbara due to debilitating pain in my left temple into the left side of my neck, and my eyes were very sensitive to light (I had to wear sunglasses to watch TV!). I have found the results of her work to be bordering on miraculous. Now, I have no more headaches, my eyes aren’t sensitive to light and I have overall greater awareness of my whole body. Her work has helped with working out the kinks and frozen attitudes of life as my body “speaks” of past injuries and then allows that attitude to move into a new fluidity of self-correcting possibility.
Within weeks of starting to see Barbara, the pain was subsiding. My range of motion began to improve. Now, I can garden, train my dog, lift everything I could before.
My life was shrinking. Pain kept me up at night. I couldn’t sleep. Was taking 12 ibuprofen a day. My fractured shoulder had healed, but in the process become “frozen”. I developed biceps tendinitis.
I was trying to do everything the PT and the doctors told me to do, several times daily exercises, lots of icing. I tried 2 acupuncturists, TENS therapy, massage…and it was getting more and more painful, not less. I saw a top surgeon. He said the surgery would be easy for him, but the recovery very painful for me. Great. More pain.
I couldn’t carry a grocery bag, put away the dishes on the overhead shelf. Everything hurt, even driving, getting dressed, washing my hair. The sister of a dear friend suggested that I see Barbara. Barbara had really helped her with a similar issue. I was a little skeptical, but I didn’t have much to lose. I was desperate. Within weeks of starting to see Barbara, the pain was subsiding. My range of motion began to improve. Now, I can garden, train my dog, lift everything I could before. I even brought back out the heavy diner style plates I love. I have almost- not quite- complete range of motion. I am taking yoga classes. I can sleep at night. No pain killers needed.
Thank you Barbara!
The techniques and careful and mindful treatments you combine have made a world of difference for me.
I want to share with you my testimonial about how you have changed my life with your services.
When I first met you I could barely walk up the stairs to get to your clinic. I had been experiencing such chronic pain in my hips and legs for so long it was becoming normal to me and I was saying “I guess this is what I have to live with”. I had been to see several practitioners from Orthopedics to Physical Therapists to Osteopath Doctors to Chiropractors. I had gone through rigorous physical therapy sessions and probably spent thousands on out of pocket and copays only to realize it did not help at all and I was back to square one. I also realized that some of the physical therapy I had received had made things worse and left me even more discouraged.
Since I started working with you, which is approaching a year now, I have made tremendous gains at obtaining a pain free life. Yes I said “pain free”. I had noticed a shift in my pain right after the first session with you. The techniques and careful and mindful treatments you combine have made a world of difference for me. Not only have you helped ease my pain and practically eliminated it I have also gained a clearer mindset and added bonus of feeling mentally stronger and confident that “I can do anything I set my mind to”. Some may say that this sounds far fetched but believe me it is not. This testimonial only just scratches the surface of how I feel about the progress I have made through your healing techniques. I am happy to have had the pleasure of meeting you and to have been given the opportunity to obtain a pain free life. Thank you so much.
