At Beyond Words Integrative Wellness we address the root causes of toxic stress and focus on creating new possibilities. Pain is both a sensory and an emotional experience, and it is also a series of memories. If you think about it, every time your chronic pain resurfaces you create another memory of experiencing pain which layers upon all your prior memories of experiencing pain. These memories can get trapped in the alarm system of the brain and create an additional source of chronic stress. These layers of pain memories, along with the associated emotions, beliefs, and life events, can be addressed through strategies that were first developed for trauma recovery. This makes good sense since chronic pain is indeed a series of traumatic events (overwhelming the system’s resilience systems). Chronic Pain is not an entity in itself, but a process, and the good news is that all the layers of chronic pain can be transformed and you and can find increased liberation and a full, rich life.
Cori Woodland is a Licensed Psychotherapist, Licensed Addiction Counselor, Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Instructor, and Certified EMDR Therapist. Cori has received specialized training in using EMDR for Chronic Pain. EMDR is a BodyMind approach (originally developed for trauma) that promotes neuroplasticity, untangles the multiple layers of pain and suffering, releases the negative emotions, beliefs, and sensations stored in the pain/trauma memories, addresses sleep, self-care, and identify issues associated with chronic pain, and facilitates resilience. EMDR has been researched for the treatment of many forms of chronic pain including chronic low back pain, chronic regional pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue disorder, conversation disorder, phantom limb pain, burn pain, and many types of complex traumas. It addresses not only the pain, but the other associated traumas and the effects of pain. For example, beliefs such as “I’m helpless; I’m trapped; I’m a burden; There is something wrong with me” can significantly change to more empowered beliefs as a result of EMDR processing.
In addition, Cori has found that many people benefit for a combination of approaches including EMDR, Brainspotting, Energy Psychology, Trauma-Sensitive Yoga, movement, nourishing dietary adjustments, Mindfulness, Family Constellations, and visualizations which welcome creativity and/or spirituality. All of these approaches can be incorporated into services with Cori, creating an individualized approach.
One example of a combined approach is in the case of someone with ancestral trauma. If one of your ancestors experienced a physical trauma or psychological trauma that the family was not able to process, then a related trauma can show up in you, the descendant. This often takes the form of chronic pain, and by processing the ancestral trauma through a combination of family constellation work, energy psychology, and EMDR the chronic pain can resolve. If you believe you are carrying pain that does not belong to you, then ancestral trauma is something we may become curious about.
In addition, working with a naturopathic doctor to address the chronic strain on the physiological stress response system (including the interplay of your endocrine system and your neurobiology) is often of important part of empowering your BodyMind, and Beyond Words Integrative Wellness coordinates with other providers that specialize in these services.
