Victoria L Magown, LMT
I am a Certified Myofascial Trigger Point Therapist, Certified Fascial Manipulation Therapist, NM & RI Licensed Massage Therapist and NM Registered Massage Therapy Instructor.
I was trained by Bonnie Prudden and graduated from the Bonnie Prudden School for Physical Fitness and Myotherapy in 1983. Continued my education with Janet Travell, MD; David Simons, MD; Hans Kraus, MD and many others.
I have always had my own clinics, first NM Myotherapy and Exercise, ABQ, NM, 1984-1990; then Pacific Myofascial Pain Clinic in Palm Spring, CA; 1990-1994; then returned to ABQ, NM and opened Myofascial Rehabilitation Center (MyoRehab), 1994-2017.
I have returned to RI where I was born and raised to be closer to family. MyoRehab is now located in Portsmouth, RI.
In 2002, my business partner, George Pellegrino, and I developed the American Institute for Myofascial Therapy (AIMS) to train multidisplinary Pain Practitioners. We taught 10 seminars a year, once a month September to June which culminated with a final exam, certifying practitioners from all disciplines as Certified Myofascial Trigger Point Therapists. After George passed, I closed AIMS in 2012.
Most recently, 2016, I completed my Fascia training with Anthony Stecco, MD and am now a Certified Fascial Manipulation Therapist.
Pain? Restriction? Weakness? I’m not like any other Pain Practitioner who may have treated you.
You benefit from my 35 years of treating, teaching, learning and staying current with the latest research on Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction.
My goal is to keep you in the game; able to still swing that gulf club or tennis racket; go for a bike ride with your grandchildren, family or friends; enjoy Zumba or an exercise class and not experience pain during or after your activities.
The most up-to-date research in Myofascial Pain is now focusing on Fascia.
Fascia is the white “packing stuff” that we didn’t pay much attention to in the past and thought it just held our muscles in place.
We now know that Fascia contracts and feels pain like muscles. Fascia is connected to other fascia, muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, nerves, blood vessels, joints, joint capsules, etc.
When treating, I manually release the Fascia and Muscles starting first with a vibrating massager and then continue by using my forearms, hands and thumbs. We then gently stretch the Fascia and Muscles to their full normal length and realign the joints using gentle traction and Muscle Energy Techniques. We keep the treatment at a tolerable level, so you do not re-tighten or become tense.
Since the joints also talk to the brain, once the joints are in correct position, the brain stops telling the Fascia and Muscles to splint and brace. This is how the treatment holds from session to session and the pain does not return, which means fewer treatments are necessary to decrease or eliminate your pain.
During treatment, I may also use Frequency Specific Microcurrent (gentle and painless, different from TENS) or the MicroLight 830 Cold Laser, both of which decreases pain, inflammation and swelling.
I treat all Pain and Dysfunction issues from the top of your head (headaches & TMJD) to your feet (Plantar Fasciitis) and everything in between. Joints are one of my specialties such as hips, knees and shoulders, before or even after joint replacements.
My goal is to keep you functional, so you can continue having an active life.
Come see me at MyoRehab and start enjoying your life and activities again.
A car hit me while crossing the street when I was 25 years old and I thought nothing of it. Just kept running like I always had until about 50 years old.
Then the left hip pain and restriction was so severe I was limping and could barely walk much less run.
At 65 years old, I went to Vicky just to get out of pain. Well, she said we had to have a goal and now I’m running again with no pain, weakness or limping.
She gave me my life back!
