Opioid addiction. Failed back surgery syndrome. GI bleeding, heart attacks or strokes from NSAIDs. Side effects from gabapentenoids that are so debilitating that the “cure” is worse than the disease. Accidental overdoses from opioids or polypharmacy. And no end to the pain in sight because, at best, the treatments temporarily numb the pain, only to have it come roaring back once the drug wears off.
It's not getting any better for pain patients. In fact, a September 2021 Harris Poll found that 56% of Americans are in chronic pain, up from about 30% before the pandemic. In addition, opioid overdoses were up 30% last year.
